Rule #1 for Social Media Marketing: Strategy First

Last week, I had two meetings with potential new clients who wanted to learn more about the social media services of 5280 IT Partners.

One question that both clients asked was what distinguishes 5280 IT Partners from other technology consulting businesses. One  difference is we develop the online marketing strategy FIRST before setting up and maintaining any social media platforms. We meet with you for up to one hour to complete a marketing intake form that helps us clearly understand the following

  • Your marketing goals – How many new and/or current clients are you shooting for each month?
  • Your client demographics – Paint us a picture of the ideal client
  • Your business sources – How are you currently advertising AND where do you receive most of your business?

Interestingly enough when I mentioned these points to one of the clients, she remarked how rare it is to find a technology business that doesn’t just jump right into setting up the sites. That’s something for you to chew on.

Coincidentally, yesterday I was browsing through Inc magazine and came across an article entitled “Be Honest: Do you have a social media strategy?” Scott Elser gives a couple of places to find trending topics for posting on the social media platforms, one of them being Google Alerts. I always tell 5280 IT Partners clients that there’s no point in posting articles or information if your followers are disinterested or unresponsive.

Read the Inc article to learn more about proper ways of setting up the social media strategy before any posting begins.
